Government Wildebeest Urban and Suburban Relocation Programme

Bringing the Serengeti to your semi-detached

Beta This is a new service — your feedback will help us improve it. 2,847 wildebeest have been successfully integrated since we launched.

Apply to host a wildebeest

Use this service to apply to host one or more government-assigned wildebeest at your residential property.

The Government Wildebeest Urban and Suburban Relocation Programme (GWUSRP) is a joint initiative by DEFRA and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Wildebeest. It was established following the Serengeti Displacement Event of 2023, the circumstances of which remain classified under the Official Secrets Act.

Since the initial Displacement intake, the programme has expanded to cover 94 postcode districts across England, Scotland, and Wales. Programme Director Hilary Tomkinson has described the expansion as ‘going exactly as expected, if what you expected was something no one could have expected.’

Registering takes around 15 minutes. If you are selected, a wildebeest will be delivered to your property within 6 to 8 weeks, or 3 to 5 years if any field on your application contains an error.

Before you start

You will need the following:

  • A residential property with garden access (minimum 4 metres squared for Phase 1, or 12 metres squared for full herd deployment)
  • A valid TV licence covering all devices in the property
  • Proof of adequate tea brewing capability (practical assessment required before Phase 1 can begin)
  • At least one spare room, garage, or conservatory not currently in regular use
  • Written confirmation from your neighbours, or evidence that they are sufficiently hard of hearing
  • Tolerance for low-frequency grunting between the hours of 6am and 9pm
Wildebeest are herd animals. The Department recommends progressing to Phase 3 (5 to 8 wildebeest) as the minimum for maintaining proper social dynamics. Single wildebeest deployments are permitted but may result in loneliness, excessive television consumption, or attempts to join local book clubs. Hosts who received wildebeest during the initial Displacement intake have reported that single deployments are particularly prone to what the Department terms ‘domestic existential drift,’ a condition characterised by staring out of windows and sighing audibly during Pointless.

This service takes around 15 minutes.

Start now

If you have already started an application, you can sign in to continue.

There is no sign-in facility for the GWUSRP.

If you have previously applied, your application is being processed and there is nothing further you can do. If you wish to check the status of your application, please contact the Wildebeest Concern Hotline on 0800 111 9453 and provide your reference number.

If a wildebeest has eaten your reference number, please complete Form WB-EATEN (Records Consumed by Ungulate) and allow 28 working days for a response.

Give feedback

Thank you for your interest in providing feedback.

The GWUSRP feedback service is currently unavailable. This is because the team member responsible for processing feedback is presently dealing with a situation involving a Phase 3 wildebeest, a Waterstones membership card, and what the Cheltenham constabulary have described as ‘a disagreement about contemporary fiction.’ We are unable to provide further details at this time.

Your feedback is important to us. Please try again in 3 to 5 business years.
