Zebra Crossing Guard Initiative

Making crossings safer, one stripe at a time

Beta This is a new service — your feedback will help us improve it.

Deployment locations

Current and proposed zebra crossing guard deployments across England.

The Zebra Crossing Guard Initiative deploys trained zebras to selected pedestrian crossings. Each deployment is assessed for crossing suitability, local authority support, and what the Deployment Team describes as ‘stripe density.’

Current deployments

Location Crossing Zebra Status Notes
Swindon Regents Circus (outside the Co-op) Margaret Suspended Suspended following The Incident (June 2023). Margaret has been promoted to Regional Crossing Coordinator. The crossing is currently unmanaged.
Nuneaton Market Place (near the Wilko) Un-named (trial) Active Trial deployment. One zebra. Going well. The zebra has been described as ‘settling in nicely’ by the Deployment Team. The Wilko has closed, which the Department stresses is unrelated.
Rotherham High Street (near the post office) None Assessment phase No zebra deployed yet. The crossing in question has been described by the Assessment Team as ‘adequately stripey.’ Local resident D.W. has written to the Department twice. The Department describes the correspondence as ‘detailed.’

Proposed locations

Town Crossing Status Notes
Dewsbury Station Road (outside the library) Proposed Awaiting council approval. Dewsbury Council has expressed ‘cautious optimism.’ The library has expressed nothing, as it is a building.
Kettering Gold Street (near the bus station) Under review Following an incident in which a resident attempted to adopt a zebra through an unrelated online form. The Department considers this ‘a misunderstanding but also a commitment we respect.’ Deployment remains under review.
Bridgend Adare Street (outside the Boots) Proposed Welsh Government consultation required. The Boots has not been consulted but is expected to be supportive.

How to request a zebra for your crossing

If you would like to request a zebra crossing guard for a pedestrian crossing in your area, contact the Zebra Deployment Team:

Zebra Deployment Team
National Zebra Training Centre
A47, Nuneaton
CV11 4ZE

Email: [email protected]
Telephone: 0800 111 ZEBR

Please include the following in your request: the location of the crossing, the type of crossing (zebra only), whether a lollipop person currently operates at the crossing, and a brief statement on why you believe the crossing would benefit from a zebra. Photographs of the crossing are welcome. Photographs of zebras are not necessary.

The Zebra Deployment Team aims to respond to all requests within 20 working days. Responses may take longer during periods of high demand or if a zebra has recently eaten a lollipop and the Team is dealing with the administrative consequences.
