What happens next
- Your application will be reviewed by the Hadrian Institute, Nuneaton. Processing takes 8 to 22 months depending on transportation logistics and the availability of chartered air or rail capacity. We appreciate your patience during this exciting time.
- You will receive an acceptance letter by post containing your departure date, tranche number, and designated departure point. Please do not contact the Institute to check on progress. They will contact you. Or they will not. Either way, the result is the same.
- In the weeks before departure, we encourage you to begin saying your goodbyes, arranging your 23 kg case, and practising standing in cold temperatures. The Pre-Departure Handbook contains our full acclimatisation guide, including recommended visits to the timber aisle at B&Q.
- On departure day, report to your designated departure point. In-transit catering will be provided. A light supper will be served upon arrival at your allocated retreat. We think you will find the forest very welcoming. It is certainly very quiet.
If your application is unsuccessful
You can reapply after 12 months. Common reasons for rejection include inadequate medical fitness, living in a postcode area with insufficient quota remaining, and describing your relationship with trees in the dietary requirements field. If you described your relationship with trees in the dietary requirements field, your file has been forwarded to the Hadrian Institute's behavioural analysis division for review.
Journey times of 8 to 22 months allow for a gradual transition. The Hadrian Institute has found that residents who spend longer in transit arrive at their retreat with what the Institute terms "a more settled disposition." Residents who spent less than 10 months in transit have been observed staring at the forest for extended periods without speaking. The Institute considers this normal.
